‘Australia’ The MovieOn November 19th, 2008 One Village held a movie night showing Baz Luhrmann’s blockbuster film ‘Australia’. Although we have held movie nights in the past, One Village had never hired the entire cinema (700 seats). The team aimed to sell at least 300 tickets. However, as the night approached it became clear that over 700 people wanted to attend the event. By November, 19 One Village had easily sold 700 tickets. This success was a clear reflection of how much we had grown as an organisation since the last movie night in early 08. A big thank you goes out to all of our invaluable volunteers who work tirelessly making our events so wonderful. THE MANGO TREE FESTIVALOn March 29th, One Village held its second ever ‘Mango Tree Festival’. This time it was bigger and better than ever before! Since September last year One Village volunteers, led by Kari Bowling and Ryan Winter, worked tirelessly to pull together local and international musicians for a heavenly fundraising, awareness and cultural integration event. Performing under our Mango Tree we had Organic Roots, Allias and the Jams (Melb), The Heather Frahn Trio, Tom West and the Art Therapists, Shedrick Yarkpai, Charles Onzi, Neo & Vunyo, Fraudulent Justice (Poetikool/Frauds Jam), Fraud Millionaires, and finished up with the explosive and ultra cool Jay Hoad Band (AUS and US)! People who attended the all day/night musical splendour gave raving reports and we saw some pretty amazing dance moves take place. Along with the real live mango tree we were given, we also raised enough money to support our Agriculture programme for 2009. A tremendous effort by all who volunteered on the day and in the planning, “webale”, “webale” “webale”! A huge thanks also to Higher Ground Arts Café for donating the venue and mentoring us along the way, and of course to the two main organisers Kari and Ryan for pulling off such an amazing day! |
